What to wear on the Golf course
What to wear on the Golf course is always important. Golf clubs are known for their dress codes, and while not all of them have exact guidelines, there are usually some rules and you should check before playing to avoid embarrassment.
The following guidelines apply to most golf clubs, including our Hallmark Hotel courses.
Smart casual trousers such as chinos or cargos are acceptable, but do not wear denim jeans. On hot days, most golf clubs allow shorts, but like trousers these need to be smart casual in style. The bottom of shorts should be just above the kneecap, as in Bermuda style.
Some clubs frown upon shorts though, so it’s always wise to check before walking onto the first green wearing anything other than smart trousers.
Many golf clubs prescribe the wearing of golf shoes. If your golf shoes have spikes, they should be plastic rather than metal, as many clubs are understandably not keen on the marks left on the green by metal spikes.
There was a time when most golf courses disapproved of trainers, but most clubs now find them acceptable.
A collarless polo golf top or short-sleeved golf shirt is recommended. On cooler days, wear a crew-neck sweater over the shirt.
If there is rain in the air, wear a waterproof top and waterproof trousers. These should be cut trim.
Many of the guidelines for women reflect those for men. You should wear smart casual pants, golf shoes or, or if allowed, smart trainers. Short ankle socks are acceptable.
For female golfers who would prefer to wear a skirt, this should be fine as long as it’s not too short.
If in doubt, visit the club’s golf shop where you can purchase clothes that will conform to the club’s dress code.
