Wall's Gloucester

download (1)Opened in 1960, the Wall's Ice Cream Factory in Gloucester is the biggest factory of its kind in Europe and is only 3 miles from the Hallmark Hotel Gloucester. The factory makes over a billion Wall’s ice creams for the UK market each year and I dare say a large portion of those have been enjoyed by the staff here at the hotel. Given this staggering fact of dairying-do, it is hardly surprising that the Gloucester factory needs 800 cows to supply it with milk and that it uses 2.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of chocolate, something that conjures up an image of a very bizarre sporting event. Over the years Wall’s has made some iconic (or even i-cone-ic) ice creams, many of which have stood the test of time and fashion. Here's our top five chart of the best of these dreamy sweet snacks: 1. Cornetto: people used to sing about having just one of these in Wall’s memorable 1980s ad campaign but which one? The mint, the strawberry, the nut, the Lemon Whippy; or even the made-on the-spot, Cornetto Soft? 2. Viennetta: this was a must have at many a 1980s dinner party. Based on the millefeuille cake, Vienetta has survived through various flavour incarnations and being the butt of jokes, and is still made today in the original mint and vanilla flavours. 3. Magnum: the force of this ice cream has been felt the world-over since 1987, and every year since then a new flavour or variation has been created to join what is now the Magnum Classic: thick ice cream lolly with a crunchy dark chocolate coating. This happens to be my personal favourite. 4. Mini Milks: it’s frozen milk you can hold, what’s not to love? The Mini Milk almost seems like the starter kit ice cream, but it was quite a loveable old stick and has kept kids (big and small) coming back to it for decades. 5. Funny Feet: while at first glance it may not seem that appetising to eat a snack modelled on arguably the sweatiest or smelliest part of the body, Funny Feet was the first ice-cream lolly and has a special place in the hearts, minds and stomachs of those who remember them. Writing this has now got my taste buds tingling, I wonder if I can persuade the local ice-cream van to make a regular stop here at the hotel!! By Steve Collins – Sales Manager
