Hotel: Hallmark Hotel Stourport Manor

ARRIVAL (How was your welcome?)

Lisa: Our welcome at the Hotel by the receptionist was warm and friendly and she even gave us some free drinks vouchers to enable us to have a pre-dinner drink in the grounds whilst the sun was still shining.  This was a really special start to our evening. Husband: On arriving at the hotel, we were welcomed with a warm smile and greeting from the receptionist and to our surprise we were given some drinks vouchers which we promptly used, having a pre-dinner drink in the beautiful grounds of the hotel.  The restaurant staff were very friendly and we immediately felt at home.

STARTERS

Lisa: For starter, I chose the Sticky Honey and Mustard Glazed Chicken Skewers.  My only complaint was that there just weren’t enough of them, but then, it was only a starter!! They were exactly as the title describes, temptingly sticky with honey and mustard and utterly delicious, with just enough soy and rice wine dip on the side. A great start. Husband: Peppery Dusted Whitebait With Tartare Sauce. One of my favourites – the portion of whitebait was very generous and well presented in a wire basket, as though they had just been caught from the sea.  The little fish were cooked well – golden and crisp.  The tartare sauce was obviously made in the kitchen and complimented the whitebait perfectly.  

MAIN COURSE

Lisa: For my main course I opted for the 8oz Hallmark Sirloin Steak, with chunky chips and chose a blue cheese sauce to go with it.  The steak was cooked exactly as I wanted, medium rare and the blue cheese sauce was to die for.  The flavour was perfect, just enough blue cheese. It was thick, creamy and mouth-watering.  The chunky chips were spot on too, fluffy on the inside with a satisfyingly crispy outer. Husband: A very succulent steak cooked medium-rare, just the way I like it.  The steak was soft and juicy and it literally melted in the mouth.  The accompaniment of chunky chips, tomato and mushroom were just right, and the peppercorn sauce, although a little on the small side, was delicious.  Having cleared my plate, I wondered whether there was any room for dessert.  

DESSERT

Lisa: To be honest, by this time I was struggling to fit any more food in as the main course was huge!  However, it would be rude not to so I chose the Bake Vanilla Cheesecake with berry compote.  A great combination, the sweetness of the cheesecake was perfectly matched with the tart fruit compote.  By the time I had finished I was well and truly done. Husband: There’s always room for dessert.  And another of my favourites – lemon tart.  Again, the portion was very generous and the tart itself was obviously made in the kitchen.  A great tart – very ‘lemony’ as you would expect, with a crisp biscuit base and a ‘dollop’ of tasty clotted cream on the side.    

DRINKS

Lisa: We went for the house Pinot Grigio which is our usual tipple and we were not disappointed.  A light refreshing wine that complimented our meal perfectly.  I know it should technically be red with beef but I’m not a big red drinker and wanted to choose something I know I’d enjoy. Husband: My wife and I are certainly not wine connoisseurs, but we do enjoy a nice glass.  The pinot was subtle, but flavoursome – a nice glass!

SERVICE

Lisa: As ever, not a single bad word to say!  We were greeted by two or three people on our way to our table, I think two were the Manager and Assistant Manager as well as our waiter Luke.  All were smiley and very friendly and it felt like we were old friends being welcomed back into the restaurant.  We didn’t feel rushed at all and Luke checked that everything was ok with our meal, just often enough, without the often experienced overkill.  We found our waiter to be professional but also relaxed and chatty which makes the whole experience enjoyable and less stuffy than some places.  We observed that all of the staff were exactly the same with each and every customer and that kind of consistency is impressive. Husband: Luke, our waiter was very friendly, and knew the menu very well.  He was attentive during the meal and asked several times if we had everything we needed.  The service was great.

ATMOSPHERE

Lisa: If I’m being completely honest we were a little concerned when we first entered the restaurant as it was 2 thirds full of ‘the white hair brigade’ who was obviously on a coach trip.  However, as the meal began there was a lot of laughter and chat filling the restaurant and more families and couples came and went and that is far better than a silent stuffy atmosphere where you don’t feel you can relax, so we were pleasantly surprised. Husband: The staff were friendly and guests were chatting amongst themselves which made for a pleasant atmosphere.  A coach trip of elderly guests was visiting the restaurant at the same time as us, however, the atmosphere was jovial and my wife and I had a very enjoyable evening.  

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Lisa: Since the very first time we visited this hotel to enquire about our wedding (back in January 2016) I have continually been impressed with the staff and service, and tonight did not fail to deliver yet again.  They are all 100% consistent in their work and should be commended for what they do and how they do it.  We have every intention of plenty more visits in the future.  Thank you for this, once again, fantastic experience. Husband: I would certainly recommend the hotel and restaurant to friends and family.
