Interesting facts about Gloucester
Did you know that Gloucester is home to a factory of something we all love? The Walls’ Ice cream factory in Gloucester is the biggest one in Europe! Cornetto anyone? Gloucester is also home to GCHQ. The building has 13,00 square meters of glass. That’s enough to double-glaze 10% of the house in Cheltenham! There are plenty of wonderful places to visit as well. The Crecy window at the Gloucester cathedral is the largest stained-glass window in Britain. It’s quite a sight! If you are visiting Gloucester in May you will be able to go to one of Gloucester’s most popular traditional events, the cheese rolling! The event is conducted on the steep hill. People have to chase and grab the rolled cheese from the hill. It is a great thing to watch, and if you are brave enough and not afraid of a potential tumble down the hill then why not give it a go yourself! Another interesting place to visit, open all year round, are the Clearwell Caves in Clearwell. This is an underground mining site that has a magnificent natural cave that has been there for over 4,500 years! If you are travelling with children, another fun place to visit is the Bourton Model Railway. It has over 500 square feet of model railways. A great day out for the family! The city is also home to many famous celebrities. Those include Alex James, Kate Moss and Kate Winslett. And for every Harry Potter fan, J.K Rowling grew up in Gloucester from the age of 9. Does the name John Stafford-Smith mean anything to you? Well he was the British composer who wrote the music to “Star Spangled Banner”, more commonly known as the US National Anthem. And he is buried in Gloucester Cathedral. If you have seen the film “Amazing Grace” then you will recognise the Gloucester docks from the film as most of it was filmed right here in Gloucester.
