Hallmark Hotels are proud to be supporting the first Hospitality Apprenticeship Week 2019.
We believe that having apprentices within our business is essential as they provide us with a skilled talent bank which means we are future proofing our business with employees who are trained in the skills that are relevant to our industry. It is also a way of us giving back to the industry we love. Having apprentices gives us the chance to show why working in the hospitality industry can be seen as a career - we get to show why we love this industry and what it actually has to offer as a career of choice.

Spotlight on Harry Sanderson: Chef apprentice at Hallmark Hotel Preston Leyland
Hear from one of our chef apprentices and what their apprenticeship is like day to day.
Why do you enjoy your job?
I love my job as it is challenging and changes every day. The people I have met working in the hotel has also contributed to how much I enjoy my job. I never thought I would have the opportunity to do something like this.
What is it like?
Busy…almost every day we are kept very busy. I do enjoy busy and fast paced as time flies. Some days are challenging when we have several events in house and lots of mouths to feed, but it is always good fun too.
What have you learnt?
I have learned a lot since I have started working at the hotel. I began as a pot wash before I was given the opportunity to move into the chef side of the kitchen. When I was given the opportunity to do my apprenticeship I was delighted. I have learned a lot of cooking skills, particularly from Head Chef Stuart and Sous Chef Tanya. However, social skills I have learned from other members of the team have also been valuable to me. My confidence has also improved massively since working as a chef.
What have you achieved?
I have recently achieved my NVQ Level 2 in Food production through my apprenticeship at the hotel. It was a very proud moment for me personally and I got quite emotional when I received my results. My mum was very proud too. I am really thankful for the opportunity that was provided for me and hope I can continue making a great impression with those I work with.
