Hallmark’s Rising Star, Brett Wilks, Top Talent Programme

I first started in the hospitality industry working for Jarvis Hotel which is now known as Jupiter Hotels as a chef before progressing to Head Chef. Being a Head Chef gave me the transferable skills to move on into management.

I then decided to take a break from the hospitality industry and do some travelling. Then when I was looking for employment around four years ago, I was hired on a casual part-time basis by Hallmark Hotels working in Food and Beverage. It was here that I realised I still loved the industry and being at the Front of House, which was a new experience after working in the kitchen all those years.

 

From here, I was lucky to be given the opportunity to take over somebody’s maternity leave as Wedding Co-ordinator at Stourport Manor. I really excelled here and doubled the wedding business within 12 months. From this, I was made a permanent full-time member of the team and I went on to win ‘Sales Person of The Year’ in the first Hallmark Hotels Awards.

Winning the award gave me the drive to push myself further with the goal of becoming a General Manager. I got involved more operationally and built a team of wedding co-ordinators before going on to Assistant Manager then interim General Manager for three months.

I then moved to The Welcombe where I joined the Top Talent Programme in May 2016. To get on to the programme, I went through an assessment day along with 50 other people and thankfully I made it down to the final four.

It was the best twelve months and I learnt so many valuable skills. We would meet every month where we would have a different workshop which would focus on things such as leadership, commerciality, sales and marketing. Leaders in the company would give talks to give us an insight into the business and I went on to attain a qualification in Hospitality Management.

Once graduating from the Top Talent programme, I moved to a higher position and I am now Deputy General Manager at The Welcombe. I couldn’t recommend Hallmark’s Top Talent programme more as it provided me with so many valuable skills and gave me exposure throughout the company whilst giving me the confidence to present to people in very senior positions.

 

A typical day in my role can be challenging, every day is completely different and I’m constantly learning. I find it so rewarding dealing with customers and leading my team to be able to provide our customer’s with a great experience, whether that be during a celebration such as a wedding or a special weekend away.
