Half Term Excursion Ideas for Hallmark Hotel Guests in the North West

It feels like the new school year has only just begun and already half term is just around the corner! So now it’s time to start mapping out your plans for the holiday. At Hallmark Hotels, we recognise the importance of quality family time and are bursting with ideas on how you can really make the most of your autumn half term.

Carlisle

Carlisle is a must-visit holiday destination for families. On the doorstep of the breath-taking Lake District, you won’t be short of things to see and do.

Why not start your adventure with Carlisle Castle? Its 900-year history is intriguing, and you can discover the castle with a guide who will tell tales of the bloody wars between the English and the Scots.

Your kids can dress up along the way, playing games and taking part in the interactive exhibitions, allowing them to have fun and learn the castle’s amazing history.

This half term Carlisle Castle is running ‘Spooky Castle’, a spine-chilling Halloween event that will involve scary storytelling and a creepy trail!

After the castle, you can go for a hike along nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Or perhaps take a steam train ride through the lush countryside? Or explore the historic Birdoswald Roman Fort?

Carlisle also offers Walby Farm Park, which is a big favourite amongst young families. The park is holding a Half Term Horrible Halloween week, involving pumpkin picking alongside the farm’s usual activities, such as meeting the animals and even feeding them.

After exploring Carlisle and its surrounding countryside, come back to Hallmark Hotel Carlisle and relax in this beautiful Victorian building.

Liverpool

The amazing city of Liverpool is a fantastic place to visit for families looking to make the most of the half term. Liverpool offers everything from awesome museums – such as Walker Art Gallery, World Museum and the Liverpool Museum – to the quirky Mersey Ferry River Cruise Explorer.

If the kids like a little bit of an adventure and detective work, we’d recommend the Liverpool Murder Mystery Treasure Trail. You might find that the grownups enjoy this just as much as the kids!

Liverpool’s Sefton Park is also holding a Spooky Welly Walk this half term; a fun fancy dress walk that raises money for charity as well as being a great activity for all the family.

One final tip for your Liverpudlian half term break is to try out the many restaurants and cafes. The food scene in Liverpool is characterised by an incredibly diverse melting pot of cultures and traditions, so you will be spoilt for choice.

If you don’t know where to start your lip licking tour, read our foodie guide to Liverpool to find out which eateries to try.

Manchester

Manchester is a big and busy city but there’s still plenty of family-friendly things to do.

For any of you football fans, we’d suggest taking a trip to the National Football Museum and taking a tour of Old Trafford and its award-winning football museum. Or, If you’re more of a blue, visit the Manchester City FC Experience Museum and Stadium Tour.

A perfect way to explore Manchester is to hop on one of the sightseeing bus tours and enjoy all the city sights. It’s a great way to learn Manchester’s history without tiring out those little legs.

After that, get down to the famous Trafford Centre for a day of shopping, dining and activity. The Centre is home to a leisure complex where you can take your family to Sea Life, Laser Quest, adventure golf, Legoland and a high ropes adventure course called Aerial Extreme (zip wire fans, rejoice!).

When you’re done with all these activities, you can wander over to the giant, cruise ship-inspired, food court and pick from a huge range of cuisines. For more information, check out this ultimate guide to the Trafford Centre food scene by Manchester Evening News.

Chester

If you’re in the Cheshire area, you can’t visit without experiencing the wonder that is Chester Zoo – officially the second most popular tourist attraction in the UK. Back after a wildly successful event last year, Enchantment of Chester Zoo offers a dose of ‘adventure, acrobatics, music and discovery’ between October 21-31.

There are plenty of other things in Chester to capture your attention and keep your family entertained during the half term break. You can go shopping in the famous Chester Rows and explore the Roman heritage of the city, immersing yourselves in a Dewa Roman Experience!

If you’re making a day of it, the Hallmark Inn Chester offers great value and is situated in the perfect location to explore all that Chester has to offer.
