Cocktail of the month: Scottish Orchard
As October sees the kids well and truly back at school and the distinctive drawing in of the night, there’s no denying that we’re now well into autumn, but don’t be downcast. Autumn has much to offer, from the change in our verdant countryside landscapes as foliage burns in golden and earthy rich streaks, to much loved dates on the calendar like Halloween and Bonfire Night. Few cocktails can summon up the vibrancy of autumn in the same way as the contemporary classic Scottish Orchard. A simple concoction, this drink incorporates the rich golden blend of a fine Scotch with the piquancy of that autumn favourite, cider. The mixture of heady bubbles and warming whisky makes this drink a great celebratory toast that is guaranteed to make your evening start (or finish) with a rush of autumnal cheer. Start with 50ml of a richly blended Scotch poured over ice and add ½ tbsp of honey syrup, plus two dashes of Angostura Bitters and stir until cold. Strain the mixture into a cocktail glass and top up with 50ml of dry cider start before topping with a slice of lemon to garnish. It’s important to add the cider last to avoid stirring up the bubbles and losing that all important sparkle. Likewise, don’t shake the mixture, as the rich blend of the Scotch prefers a more gentle combining approach. Finally, always enjoy your cocktails responsibly, with good company and in comfortable surroundings, like at a Hallmark Hotel. Cheers, or as they say in Scottish Gaelic, Slàinte mhath!
