Best foods to eat before and after going to the gym
Going for a workout in the gym? Don’t let your diet scupper your work rate - here are some recommended foods:
Prior to a workout, eat small carbohydrates, as they slowly release energy. Try sliced bananas on whole wheat toast. This is easy to digest, with the whole wheat bread providing carbohydrates and the fruit adding extra energy. Bananas raise your potassium levels, which drop when you sweat. Sprinkle cinnamon on the toast to help stabilise blood sugar levels. If you’re in a hurry, then try trail mix, which is a combination of dried fruit, nuts and seeds that provides an energy boost. Don’t eat too much though, as seeds and nuts take a while to digest and could slow you down. Smoothies are another good choice if time is limited. It’s best to blend your own using fresh fruit and yoghurt.
Once you leave the gym, you need dense nutrients in the form of lean proteins and carbohydrates. Grilled chicken and mixed vegetables are ideal. An omelette is also a good source of protein. Cook it with stir fried vegetables and serve with avocado to provide your body with a good range of vitamins and antioxidants. Salmon contains bioactive peptides that help regulate insulin and provide joint support. Try grilled salmon with sweet potatoes, which help restore glycogen levels that can get depleted after a workout. Eating healthy carbohydrates before the gym followed by lean protein afterwards can enhance the health benefits of going to the gym. At Hallmark Hotels, we can offer you both the ideal meal and workout.
