December has arrived which means only one thing, Christmas! It’s finally time to get into the festive spirit and where better to find lovely presents, drink mulled wine and grab some last-minute gifts than at a Christmas market.
Found all over the country, these seasonal celebrations are a great way to spend a day, or even a weekend, in your favourite city with your favourite people. To help you end the year on a high, we’ve created a definitive guide to 2017’s very best UK Christmas markets.
Wintertime - Southbank Centre
Following the riverfront between Waterloo Bridge and the London Eye, Wintertime is the Southbank Centre’s annual Christmas market. This free market runs from the 10th of November to the 4th of January and offers more than just traditional presents. There is a Finnish rooftop sauna which overlooks the River Thames and a snow globe serving delicious fondue; all accompanied by music, dancing and singalongs.
With many joyful activities to see and do, why not make a Christmas getaway and spend the weekend in London? Stay in one of Hallmark Hotel London’s rooms and take an extended break full of festive magic.
Alpine Market – Bournemouth
Situated a mere 10-minute walk from Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth West Cliff, this alpine market embraces the full German Christmas tradition; customary gifts, foods and beer are sold amongst glowing, decorated cabins.
This year the market also has an impressive, two-storey lodge located in the town centre. The second floor overlooks the German market below, providing the perfect festive view to admire whilst you drink locally crafted beer. The market will be running until the 4th of January so there is plenty of time to head down and experience a German Christmas!
George Square Christmas Market – Glasgow
Treat yourself to a Christmassy weekend away by travelling up to Glasgow and wandering around George Square’s Christmas market. Located in the heart of the city, this market is open until the 29th of December and offers a wide selection of street food, amazing decorations, and independent retailers.
George Square is also home to the iconic Big Wheel, a traditional carousel and helter-skelter, all covered in festive fairy lights. This market is great for families of all ages and is only a short walk from Hallmark Hotel Glasgow, so you can head back and rest after all the fun.
Chester Christmas Market - Chester
The Chester Christmas market is made up of over 70 traditional wooden chalets with those Christmassy gifts you’re bound to love. Surrounding the central Christmas tree, the market lights up the city with colour and festive cheer.
Chester Cathedral will also open its doors to offer a range of events and activities, including carols and even a Christmas tree festival. Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the merrymaking by staying the night in Hallmark Inn Chester.
Christmas Ice and Festive Market – Liverpool
Liverpool’s Christmas Ice Festival is a 10-minute drive from Hallmark Inn Liverpool and is a must-see this Christmas. Open until the 7th January, this market has a triple-lane ice slide which allows you to skate along a 30-metre run. If this doesn’t sound like enough fun, they also have a larger ice rink and an enchanted forest ice bar.
For those of you that like a more relaxed Christmas, the festival also has a range of stalls and an Après Lounge where you can have a hot chocolate to keep the chill away.
Kings Street French Market - Manchester
This Christmas why not stroll through Manchester’s French market. Open until the 20th of December and located near Hallmark Inn Manchester South, this market has a wonderful collection of French delicacies that would make perfect gifts for any family member.
If the French market isn’t enough, take a 2-minute walk down the street to find Albert Square’s European market. This market, open until the 21st of December, has a huge variety of festive produce from continental countries, making Manchester a hub of Christmas festivities.
We hope you will attend some of these festive fairs with Hallmark Hotels and have yourself a very merry Christmas!
