After the excitement of the big proposal has died down, your families have been told the exciting news and you are settling into life as a betrothed couple, it’s time to start planning your big day!
There’s plenty to organise and many details to iron out; so, we’re here to give you some tips, ideas, and inspiration for planning the wedding of your dreams!
1. Work out your budget and stick to it
You can’t plan a wedding until you know how much money you can spend on it. Once you have worked out how much of your savings you want to put towards it, factored in any family contributions, you can plan accordingly.
Make a list of the main expenses and suppliers, from the venue, to transport, to flowers, the photographer, and the dress and suit. When you know roughly what you will need to source, you can shop around for deals and start gathering quotes for your budget sheet.
Once you get quotes, you can see how far your budget will stretch and what you can spend more on or cut back on.
2. Don’t worry about setting an exact date, decide on which month of which year
You can’t plan too much until you know when you want to get married, so that is where you start. You don’t have to know the exact date as this is something you will work out with the venue based on availability.
All you need to decide is which year and what season you want to get married in; an enchanting winter wedding or a sizzling summer wedding?
3. Choose the wedding style/theme you want based on who you are as a couple
The theme and style of a wedding will be remembered forever (till death us do part, actually) and it can really set the tone for the whole day. Your style can include theme, colour scheme, and many other things. It can be an entire ‘concept’.
If you aren’t sure what couple style you are, then take our quiz to find out!
4. Take a trip together and get inspired
Have a mini break and reconnect. Spending quality time with each other away from your normal routine can really help you remember why you fell in love in the first place. It might also give you some extra ideas or inspiration for your big day!
You could enjoy a quick getaway for two somewhere warm and sunny to escape the wedding planning fever. Or book yourselves into the hotel you’re getting married in and enjoy some spa treatments and a romantic dinner. Find out more about our luxury spa breaks for couples and romantic hotels.
5. Choose a venue you will want to go to again, somewhere special and right for you
There are so many venue types to choose from when it comes to weddings; you can marry in a place of worship, in a registry office, town hall, library, zoo, museum (provided these places are licensed).
Choosing to have your wedding at a hotel is the ideal choice if you wish for your ceremony, reception, and accommodation to all be in the same place. Hallmark Hotels has 22 beautiful wedding hotels where you can have the wedding of your dreams and a team to help you have the best day of your life.
No stressing about moving from venue to venue on time, in crowds. And you won't be late for your ceremony due to traffic if you wake up and get ready in your bridal suite!
6. Get a wedding coordinator to take all your stress away
This can usually be a perk when you select a wedding package and believe us that it’s money well-spent. Having an expert on organising weddings helping you, guiding you and taking care of all the stressful admin is priceless.
7. Don’t be afraid to do something completely different
If you like to break the mould and do things your way, your wedding is the perfect time to do it. Fancy getting married in the evening? Do it. Go barefoot and marry outside? Go for it.
Hallmark Hotels is a wedding expert, we can give you an evening ceremony under the stars at Hallmark Hotel Stourport Manor or among palm trees while overlooking the sea at Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton.
You can even get married in an Italian terrace garden, surrounded by classical sculptures in a magnificent Grade II listed brick and stucco hotel at Hallmark Hotel Chester The Queen.
8. Try on as many dresses as you fancy but go with the one that makes everyone cry when they see you, including yourself!
You will know when you see it. Like kissing frogs to find a prince, you might have to test out a few styles to figure out which dress is your dress but once you find it, don’t let it go.
9. Plan your dream menu
It might be a menu full of comfort foods or your barbecue favourites, whatever you and your beloved dream of eating after saying "I do", talk to your venue about making that dream a reality.
10. Make a playlist and keep adding to it in the run-up to the wedding
Both of you should keep a long list of songs you want to play at the reception, keep adding to it as you plan your day. Include songs that are just about you or that conjure up happy memories amongst all your family and friends.
Build the list over the months leading up to your wedding and at the reception, you will have a soundtrack to your life while you celebrate!
11. Plan a fun wedding dance
Coming up with and then rehearsing a funny first wedding dance can be such a fun thing for you to do as a team. Inject some humour into a formal occasion, show off your dancing skills and just have a laugh!
Keep it simple so you’ll remember all the moves on the big day. You will wow your guests and probably create some priceless video footage you can show your grandkids one day.
