Following the social and economic success of Liverpool as European City of Culture in 2008, it was decided that every four years one UK city would have the opportunity to be the UK City of Culture for that year. The inaugural UK City of Culture was Londonderry in 2013. In the same year, four other cities; Dundee, Hull, Leicester and Swansea were shortlisted to become the UK City of Culture in 2017. Hull were the unanimous winners with a theme based on a city coming out of the shadows.
After three years of planning, the programme is ready to kick off on 1st January 2017 with an action packed year of events taking place right across the city.
The year of culture has been broken down into four very distinct seasons:
The first celebration will take place on Sunday 1st January “In with a Bang” will be a glittering fireworks display at 20.17pm over the Humber Marina. For a preview of some of the events due to hit the city in Season One – click here and search.
From artists, to poetry, music, comedy and theatre (to name but a few) Hull is coming alive with performances, events and shows. There is quite literally no better time to visit this fascinating place and be part of what will be an incredible year for Hull.
Key to enjoying a lot of this action will be a great place to stay, eat and drink with a really warm welcome too. There’s no better place to stay than the four-star Hallmark Hotel Hull, one of the only four-star hotels in the area. The team would be happy to advise on event tickets, locations and transport between the hotel to events. So, what are you waiting for? We can’t wait to welcome you back to ours!
