Hallmark Hotel Flitwick Manor

Welcome to the quintessential English country house: a small but beautifully formed hotel that drips with history and is swaddled by serene landscaped gardens – all within easy reach of London, Woburn Abbey and Bletchley Park for a romantic weekend escape.

Stay at Hallmark Hotel Flitwick Manor (formerly part of Menzies Hotels) – arriving along an exquisite 18th century avenue of lime trees – and you’re stepping into a world worthy of a period drama. The mansion, whose heart dates back to the 17th century, was refurbished and extended several times over the next two hundred years, culminating in a final tweak by Sir Albert Richardson, the Richard Rogers of his day. Small wonder it’s grade II* listed.

Even before you settle down next to our roaring fire in a wingback leather chair, you’ll be seduced by our grounds. They share centre stage with the house. Quite right too. Stroll around them and you’ll discover a famous estate whose 42 acres of ‘pleasure grounds’, developed by George Brooks and his son around the turn of the 18th century, won high praise from the legendary botanist and garden designer, CJ Loudon.

They also contain a walled garden, an arboretum and a lake along with a grade I listed parish church and grass-topped grotto bridge with classic and Gothic features concealing an arched room. The lush estate, now boasting a croquet lawn in front of the mansion, is a fabulous part of any stay.

Of course the Hallmark Hotel Flitwick Manor has moved with the times. Its ridiculously cosy individually styled 18 rooms may have fine antiques, lushly draped four-poster beds and period furniture, but they call come with warp speed Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs with Sky Sports and 24-hour room service.

There’s also our atmospheric restaurant with its wood paneling, candlelight and marvelous panoramas of the gardens. It serves superb British and European cuisine, fuelled by the freshest seasonal ingredients. Don’t just take our word for it. The experts have awarded it two AA Rosettes for the likes of chicken Wiener schnitzel, pan-fried salmon with toasted almonds and beer and ale pie.

Afternoon tea is a special treat that just seems right when you’ve had a hearty countryside walk or a game of croquet on the lawn. We serve an indulgent selection of sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, and an assortment of cakes.

The countryside location and extensive, peaceful grounds belie the fact that the Hallmark Hotel Flitwick Manor is just half an hour from London by train, and close to Luton Airport – very convenient for a couple of nights’ stay before or after your flight.

With an outstanding restaurant, lovely lounges and just 18 bedrooms this boutique country house hotel is perfect for exclusive use. Imagine taking over the entire Manor for your celebration with family and friends.

Unsurprisingly given our architecture, setting and location  – just 35 minutes by train from central London and close to the M1 and M25 – we’re a hotspot for both business functions, from meetings to team-building days, to private celebrations including everything from weddings to birthday and anniversary parties. Along with our experienced team of dedicated event coordinators, we have three stunning function suites, all licensed for civil ceremonies, which can hold up to 58 guests. Larger weddings for up to 150 can use our classic white marquee.

Finally, given our rich history, we’d be disappointed if we couldn’t tell you of a resident ghost. In fact we can tell you of two. Don’t scoff. Many people have seen them before you. If it’s not the apparition of Mrs Brooks herself, it’s the elderly white-haired housekeeper who lived in a hidden room beneath the roof eaves. She’s appeared regularly to staff in the corridors and is known to leave an impression on the cushion of her favourite chair. Clearly she can’t bring herself to check out of the manor. You can’t blame her. It’s simply lovely. Come and see for yourself.

Lovely, classically traditional hotel, with individual and charming bedrooms. Set in beautiful countryside, very quiet and peaceful. Delicious dinner and breakfast and warm, attentive staff who make you feel very welcome. My third visit here and it just gets better.
