Walk through the colonnaded entrance of our magnificent brick and stucco Italianate Hotel and you’re following a trail blazed by some extraordinary guests. Since opening in 1860 to serve first-class rail passengers, we’ve entertained the likes of Charles Dickens, Cecil Rhodes and Lillie Langtry. We don’t believe she stayed with her lover, the Prince of Wales. But even if we did, we wouldn’t say. We’re terribly discreet.
Naturally the marvelous Grade 11 listed Best Western Premier Hallmark Hotel Chester The Queen, a grand dame for over 150 years, has moved with the times. Its stunning Victorian features including a glorious curling four-storey open-well staircase with cast iron balustrade, marble-floored lobby and huge fireplaces have been enhanced by superb, often quirky contemporary design, with rich colours, intriguing historic photographs and striking light installations.
A multi-million pound refurbishment added 87 suites in 2008, and we’ve just opened the Virgins’ Row, a new series of wonderfully romantic rooms in the eaves of our famous historic building. We’re now the largest hotel in Chester with 218 bedrooms and suites – all boasting super-fast fibre optic WiFi – guaranteeing accommodation for every taste and budget.
Along with a seriously good night’s sleep, we offer seriously good award-winning food. Kings' Grill Chef, Alan Davies, alchemizes fine locally sourced ingredients into a seasonal modern British menu that has earned two AA Rosettes. And while we like to be modest, we really must mention our renowned 103-item breakfast. Like our cocktail list, it’s the largest in the city. In time it will no doubt become a local institution, just like the delightful afternoon tea served in the Albert Lounge for over a century and a half.
Built in the 1850s, in homage to Queen Victoria, as the country’s first grand railway hotel. The owners, Marylebone Railway, employed Thomas Penson who designed the hotel with central public areas, soaring atrium, and grand staircase, with bedrooms facing into the open square. Using a steel infrastructure and concrete cladding, the Queen is considered as the world’s first ever sky scraper. Never before had a building been constructed in this manner – state of the art – the Shard of the 1850s.
Recently portrayed in the BBC drama ‘My Zoo’, Chester Zoological Gardens are considered to be amongst the very best in the world. This charitable organisation ploughs all profits back into the welfare of animals around the world and into constantly enhancing the visitor experience. 2015 saw the open of Islands – a brand new attraction where you travel around the Islands of Sumatra by boat, taking in the sights, sounds, wildlife and horticulture of Indonesia.
Nowhere offers boutique shopping in such beautiful surroundings as Chester. This historic, heritage city boasts shopping under cover – a medieval mall, with stores under cover on two levels on all city streets; a truly unique experience. In addition to all the top high street names, visitors are offered a wide ranging choice of one-off, independent, high-end fashion boutiques, jewellers, antique shops, art galleries, home stores and coffee shops. Sit at pavement cafes and watch the world go by, or take a walk along the beautiful river promenade.
Fine dining isn’t our only accolade. Far from it. As well as winning gold in the Green Tourism awards, in 2014/ 2015 we picked up the gong for Chester and Cheshire Excellence in Business Tourism: recognition of our stellar reputation for hosting meetings, training and conferences. And the same formula of beautiful versatile function rooms and banqueting suites, alongside experienced dedicated event planners, also makes us a favourite choice for hosting weddings and private celebrations.
Add in our small but perfectly formed state-of-the-art gym, our Secret Sanctuary Spa with exclusive organic Pinks Boutique products, and our excellent rail, road and air links, and the Hallmark Hotel Chester The Queen delivers a lot. An awful lot. So whether you’re planning to visit for the acclaimed local shopping, race days or to explore the city’s Roman sites and museums, or whether you’re heading here on business, we look forward to seeing you soon.
