We couldn’t make the drive to Carlisle without stopping at one of my favourite places to visit in the UK, The Lake District. The second biggest lake, Lake Ullswater is just a 40-minute drive from the hotel. It really isn’t that far from Carlisle at all and it’s really worth a stop at when visiting for a weekend in Carlisle. The scenery is absolutely stunning and we decided to make the most of the day and visit three lakes, Windermere, Wastwater (the deepest lake in the UK) and Ullswater. From rowing on the lake to peaceful places to stop the car and enjoy the sights, it really is such a spectacular place to visit.

Laura The Explorer’s Weekend In Carlisle

Weekend In Carlisle

Saturday, our first full day in Carlisle. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the hotel before making the 30-minute drive to Birdoswald Roman Fort which is home to the longest stretch of Hadrian’s wall. Not only is there so much history to indulge in but the whole place is surrounded by such beautiful countryside, it really is the perfect place for a hike or picnic, whilst also enjoying all the surrounding history. After a wonderful day exploring Hadrian’s wall, we headed back to the hotel ready for an evening in Carlisle city as it is literally on the doorstep of the hotel. There are a number of bars and restaurants to enjoy, and even live music if you pick the right night (I definitely enjoyed some rather tasty and quirky cocktails I have never had before).

Weekend In Carlisle

On Sunday we spent the morning enjoying the history that Carlisle has to offer. You will find Carlisle’s historic walk which features so many landmarks and attractions to visit. On our list was Carlisle Castle and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. Both really great places to learn some facts and enjoy the history come to life. We then made the 5-minute walk back to the hotel to enjoy a very tasty roast dinner, making sure there was room for Hallmark Hotel’s delicious chocolate brownie.
