Having always wanted to travel on the famed Settle-Carlisle Railway, I was delighted when a business meeting necessitated the trip.
I actually joined at Leeds and the train went straight though to Carlisle. Joining at any point before Settle means you can guarantee a good seat…unless you manage to reserve a seat anyway of course!
There are steam trains that do this journey but cost rather more. I guess it depends on how much of a train enthusiast you are as to whether these are worth the extra spend. On a normal train, the views are equally stunning. I was lucky to have a bright clear day and could see the surrounding countryside for miles around. Don’t forget to look out for all the quaint little stations and the breathtaking Ribblehead Viaduct.
You can take a picnic, but volunteers also serve refreshments from a trolley service which were very reasonably priced.
I’d highly recommend this for a great day out.
